especially not likely when you consider the Chargers' latest move in firing Defensive Coordinator Ted Cottrell.

They say a little bit of change will do you good. I don't always agree with
that way of thinking. Heading into the bye week, we are an extremely

chance now of making the playoffs. I think it's safe to say that the division

MIAMI (AP)—The Miami Dolphins are winning the old-
fashioned way. The single wing helped build a lead, and a
goal-line stand preserved it.
Ronnie Brown scored the decisive touchdown from the
formation the Dolphins revived two weeks ago, their
smothering defense rose to the occasion at the 1-yard line in
the fourth quarter, and Miami pulled off its second successive upset by beating San Diego 17-10 Sunday.
The single wing was less explosive than in the Dolphins’ win at New England, but running back Brown took a
direct snap 11 times on running plays that netted 49 yards and Miami’s second touchdown.

It’s got to stop—the slow starts, the inconsistent play, the
losing to teams the Chargers should beat.
So says Pro Bowl running back LaDainian Tomlinson in the
aftermath of Sunday’s disappointing defeat to the Dolphins.
“I didn’t get much sleep (Sunday) night,” Tomlinson said. “That
is typical about this point of the season, especially after a loss
like that.”
The Chargers, a trendy pick to be a Super Bowl participant, are trying to get to .500. Instead of building on an AFC
West road win the previous week in Oakland, the Chargers were flat and out of synch in a road loss at Miami.

Right now you might be questioning a few things as a Charger
fan after the Miami loss and this "as usual" bizarre start to our
season, I know I am.
The one big question I have is "why is everyone in San Diego a
coach?” Whether it's on the radio, a sports site or recapping
the game with some friends, we all seem to have similar
insights. Most of us talk big but have never even come close to
playing ball at this level and yet we still see the issues plain as
day.

SAN DIEGO (AP)—LaDainian Tomlinson is weary, sore and
doesn’t seem to have any answers.
Fans of the San Diego Chargers seem pretty beat up, too,
although they’ve got some really strong opinions about what’s
wrong with their team.
Five games into what is supposed to be a Super Bowl
seasonthe Bolts are bewildering. They’re 2-3 and need to win
Sunday night against their most recent nemesis, the New
England Patriots, to avoid being in a real mess.

With their franchise quarterback out for the
season, the New England Patriots have
patched together a successful start to

such excuse, yet they own a losing record.
To avoid falling into a deeper hole, the Chargers must try to beat a Patriots team looking for its second straight
win in California when these traditional AFC powers meet on Sunday night.

Chambers sprained his ankle during last Sunday's loss to the
Miami Dolphins and didn't practice this week. He was unsure if
he would test the ankle during warmups on Sunday.
However, he wasn't ready to say he'd miss the game.
"Actually, I'm still just taking it one day at a time," Chambers
said. "I feel better than I did yesterday."
Outside linebacker Jyles Tucker also was listed as doubtful and said he would test his injured hamstring before
Sunday's game.

SAN DIEGO -- Finally solving their Patriots problem may very well
have saved the season for Philip Rivers and the San Diego
Chargers.
Rivers threw three touchdown passes and San Diego's defense
stuffed quarterback Matt Cassel on fourth-and-goal from the
1-yard line to highlight a 30-10 win over New England on Sunday night.
Rivers and the rest of the Chargers (3-3) know that beating the Patriots doesn't make up for the loss that kept
them out of the Super Bowl or that mind-numbing home playoff defeat two seasons ago.

LOS ANGELES -- Chris Mims, a former defensive lineman for

dead in his downtown apartment Wednesday. He was 38.
Authorities said there was no evidence of foul play.
Mims was discovered shortly before 9:30 a.m. by police officers

while dropping back to cover a pass.
That was the first quarter. By the fourth, the Buffalo Bills
linebacker had picked himself up to provide all the spark his
team needed, helping secure a 23-14 win over the San Diego
Chargers on Sunday.
Mitchell had a key interception and also forced a fumble in the final 4 minutes to lift an injury-depleted defense,

BAGSHOT, England (AP)—The change of setting to the rural
outskirts of London hasn’t exactly eased the sting of a
disappointing loss for San Diego Chargers quarterback Philip
Rivers.
The Chargers arrived in England on Monday morning after a
long flight from Buffalo, where Rivers fumbled twice and threw
an interception in a 23-14 loss to the Bills.
“The taste of that loss isn’t gone by any means,” Rivers said Monday at the team’s base, a five-star hotel with a
nearby practice field lined with trees. “It was a big game that we lost yesterday, and we know that, but we’re
going to have to rebound.”

The Chargers went far to be so close.
Close to winning two games—instead of none—on their
11,000-mile jaunt in the name of the NFL.
Now licking their road wounds after losses to the Saints and
Bills, they head into their bye week and are glad to be home.
And in the AFC West.
By residing in one of the NFL’s most tepid division, the 3-5 Chargers’ season isn’t the wreck it could be. San
Diego could pull within one game of the lead if Denver loses while the Chargers rest on Sunday.
But that is also taking the most optimistic of views about a fading team. The truth is the Chargers’ season isn’t
going to get better until the pass defense—ranked last in the NFL—improves.

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Without a sack or interception in the last
nine quarters, the San Diego Chargers on Tuesday fired

San Diego Chargers’ hardest hit in weeks when he fired

Cottrell was sacked by the head coach in large part because
his defense couldn’t get to opposing quarterbacks, the most
