The Chargers had one of the best byes they could imagine:
• Some of their key players were able to rest nagging injuries,
which should help the cause moving forward.
• The embattled defense got extended time to get to know its
new coordinator, Ron Rivera.

After returning from an 11,000-mile, two-loss road trip, firing a

seasons they return to a game.
“I think our guys are looking forward to playing at home,” coach Norv Turner said. “We haven’t been in our
stadium in a month. It’ll be good to be in our stadium with the energy level, the fans, everything involved with it.”

As poorly as the San Diego Chargers have been playing lately,
they know they have enough time to make a playoff run. Getting
a win over the lowly Kansas City Chiefs would be a good place
to start.
The Chargers look to come out of their bye week rejuvenated and avoid dropping their third straight game
Sunday when they host the Chiefs.
San Diego (3-5) was expected to contend for the Super Bowl this season, but has already lost as many games
as it did last year, when it advanced to the AFC championship game.

Wins are too hard to come by in the NFL. That's why the
Chargers had no intentions of throwing back Sunday's 20-19
verdict over the Chiefs.
So what if the Chiefs have now lost 17 of their past 18 games.
Who cares if San Diego had to turn back a
two-point-conversion attempt in the final 23 seconds.
And if Tyler Thigpen looked more like Len Dawson than he
should have, so be it.
The Chargers are alive, and that's what really matters.
But a closer look reveals that San Diego continues to live on the edge.
Coming off a bye, playing under a new defensive coordinator and playing at home with a playoff spot potentially
slipping away, the Chargers barely managed to hold off the last-place Chiefs.

The Pittsburgh Steelers and San Diego Chargers both have
plenty of concerns. At the top of those lists are their franchise
players.
Two teams who were considered Super Bowl contenders
entering this season, but have not played much like it recently,
Steelers host the Chargers and frustrated star LaDainian
Tomlinson.
Pittsburgh (6-3) goes into this matchup in much better position, tied atop the AFC North with Baltimore, while
San Diego (4-5) sits a game behind AFC West-leading Denver and trying to get back to .500.

Chargers coach Norv Turner said Chambers is considerably better

“It’s gradually getting better,” Chambers said of his ankle. “I would imagine that I would be much better this

Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jamal Williams didn’t practice Thursday, but Turner said he was just resting the 11-
year veteran.

PITTSBURGH (AP)—There’s never been a game like this in
NFL history.
The bizarre 11-10 final score was fitting because the Chargers
still haven’t had the regular-season finish they want in
Pittsburgh: a winning one.
Ben Roethlisberger stayed away from the mistakes that cost
the Steelers their previous two home games, Willie Parker ran
for 115 yards and Jeff Reed’s third field goal won it—a 32-
yarder with 11 seconds remaining—as Pittsburgh rallied to
beat the Chargers on a snowy Sunday.
The first such score in 12,837 NFL games was in jeopardy when Troy Polamalu returned an errant lateral 12 yards
for an apparent touchdown on the final play. The play was overturned on review—it was called an illegal forward

SAN DIEGO (AP)—The underachieving San Diego Chargers
had a long, quiet plane ride home from Pittsburgh, the scene
of their latest debacle.
“Nobody said much. I don’t even know how to take that,” star
running back LaDainian Tomlinson.
Sunday’s bizarre 11-10 loss to the Steelers left the two-time
defending AFC West champion Chargers 4-6 and two games
behind Denver with six games left.

LaDainian Tomlinson is nothing if not honest.
While a parade of Chargers were spinning the positive Monday
— in wake of the team's third loss in four games Sunday in
Pittsburgh — Tomlinson delivered a dose of truth serum about
the team's dwindling playoff hopes.
"I think so, I really do," Tomlinson said. "We are two games
back. We are not out of it, but it's like blown opportunities we
keep on talking about when we could have easily been tied
with Denver right now."
The Chargers, at 4-6, are in a world of hurt. While their next three games are at home, they come against a
surging Colts team, an improved Falcons squad and their biggest divisional foe, the Raiders.
After falling 11-10 to the Steelers, the sands in this season's hour glass are being depleted fast.

disappointment in his two seasons with the San Diego
Chargers, will miss the rest of the season with a groin injury.
Davis was placed on injured reserve on Wednesday. Tackle
Corey Clark was signed from the practice squad to take Davis’
spot on the active roster.
Davis had only four catches for 59 yards and no touchdowns
this season and missed the last five games while recovering
from the injury.
Davis, a first-round draft pick in 2007, had 20 catches for 188 yards and one touchdown as a rookie.
Neither coach Norv Turner nor general manager A.J. Smith immediately returned calls seeking comment. The
Chargers made the move after Turner held his daily news conference.
Cornerback Grant Mason was signed to take Clark’s vacancy on the practice squad.

Peyton Manning has had plenty of days in the NFL he'll want to
remember. Two games against the San Diego Chargers last
season aren't among them.
Manning will look to put one of his worst performances further in the rearview mirror Sunday as the Indianapolis
Colts try for their fourth straight win in a matchup with the Chargers - the team that also knocked the Colts out of

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Redemption couldn’t have been any from a
lot farther out.
One of the most clutch kickers in NFL history, Vinatieri made a
51-yard field goal as time expired to lift Peyton Manning and
the Indianapolis Colts to a heart-stopping 23-20 win over the
San Diego Chargers on Sunday night.
Vinatieri was kicking toward the same goal posts where just more than a year ago he pushed a 29-yard field-
goal attempt wide right with 1:31 left, allowing the Chargers to hold on for a 23-21 win.
Vinatieri said he heard some pregame smack talk from fans about last year’s miss.

If hope really does float, the Chargers should be out cruising

The 4-7 Chargers enter Sunday's game against the visiting

Or not.
If not having the good luck of playing the AFC West, the Chargers' season would be sunk.
While other 4-7 squads are deciding on vacation spots, the Chargers still eye a playoff spot.
Strange, but true when trailing the first-place Broncos with two games with five to play.
