Final 2009 Draft Analysis/Upcoming Preseason
05/26/09
BrandX, Bolt You! Sports Writer
So it’s been a month since the draft, and as promised I am going to discuss the more promising free agents the Chargers
signed the day after the draft (what I refer to as “Day 3”), as well as which teams had the best and worst draft.  After a thorough
analysis of all 32 teams, I have decided that the Oakland Raiders didn’t do as bad as I had originally thought.  In fact, I think
they did better than San Diego.  I hate to say it, but they addressed their teams’ needs better than the Chargers.  Not by much,
but they did so in the top half of the draft, and that’s where it counts the most.  Their only mistake was not addressing their
offensive line.  I will also provide some insight on the upcoming Chargers 2009 season.  Ok, now let’s get to it…

Merriman downplays speculation about future
05/01/09
BERNIE WILSON AP Sports Writer
Shawne Merriman stood out even though he was held out of team drills in the
opening practice of the San Diego Chargers’ minicamp on Friday.

First, there’s his mohawk, which he said he got just for the heck of it. Then
there’s the ever-present speculation that 2009 could be the final season the
star outside linebacker spends with the San Diego Chargers.

Merriman just wants to play football, although he’s not quite ready yet. He’s still
rehabbing after having season-ending knee surgery after the opening game
last year.

Chargers Team Report

Inside Slant
Usually to get a club’s attention, it’s a player’s game tape which raise an
interest.

But in the case of defensive end
Vaughn Martin, he was a hit on YouTube
long before the recent draft.

And it involved the Chargers, who would ultimately pick Martin with a fourth-
round pick.

Tomlinson 'looks great,' Turner says
05/05/09
Associated Press
LaDainian Tomlinson was back where he wanted to be: Chargers Park.

Tomlinson, whose return to San Diego was in doubt before he restructured his contract in
March, was smiling Sunday. He participated in all three days of the Chargers' minicamp after
a groin injury kept him from the team's final playoff game last season.

"L.T. looks great," coach Norv Turner said. "He has been out here running for a month, so he
didn't show anything different." Tomlinson didn't show any signs of his latest injury. The
NFL's record holder for touchdowns in a season is pleased with his offseason preparations.

Linebacker Shawne Merriman who missed all but one game in his fourth
season as a pro, still has the fire in his belly that led to him being selected a
Pro Bowler in his first three seasons.

“I’m frustrated as hell,” Merriman said. “I want to get out there and play ball. The
advantage I have is that I get to do it with a helmet and shoulder pads, so any
frustration I have will be taken out on the field.”

It’s a big year for Merriman in many ways. Not only does he want to regain his
status as being among the NFL’s premier pass-rushers, but his contract
expires at the end of the year.
Raiders sign former Chargers FB Lorenzo Neal
05/08/09
Associated Press
The Oakland Raiders have bolstered their backfield by signing fullback Lorenzo
Neal and running back Gary Russell.

The team added the two backs in time for the start of the mandatory minicamp
Friday.

The Raiders were unable to find a fullback in the draft, so they signed Neal. He
is considered one of the best blocking backs in the game. The 16-year veteran
spent last season in Baltimore.

Russell spent two seasons in Pittsburgh, rushing for 98 yards and three
touchdowns.

LaDainian Tomlinson’s offseason is usually pretty mundane: Work out like a
fiend, do a few commercials and arrive at training camp with the hunger for
success which has marked each of his eight NFL season.

But this offseason was a tad different. It started with attending the inauguration
of President Barack Obama.
“When he was sworn in it was an emotional moment,” Tomlinson said. “That was when to me it sank in.” Tomlinson didn’t know
if his ninth NFL season would include hanging his shingle in San Diego. The team needed him to restructure his contract, and
there were no guarantees the two sides would find common ground.

Wishing everyone safe and enjoyable Memorial Day
weekend

Memorial Day:  A United States federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (May
25 in 2009). Formerly known as
Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and
women who died while in the military service. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of
the American Civil War (it is celebrated near the day of reunification after the civil war), it
was expanded after World War I to include American casualties of any war or military
action.

Chargers sack proposal for $1 billion stadium
05/29.09
Associated Press
The San Diego Chargers on Thursday rejected a developer’s proposal to
build a $1 billion stadium as part of a redevelopment of the land surrounding
Qualcomm Stadium, saying the project would be too enormous for the
Mission Valley site.

Hours before Perry Dealy publicly unveiled the project, attorney Mark Fabiani
sent the developer a letter saying the team doesn’t think it has a realistic
chance and asking him to stop referring to the Chargers in promoting the
project.

Attention all you “fans”
05/31/09
Blogroll: Charger_Girl at
SanDiegoChargers.Contentquake
I love true fans.  Fans who stick through their team during 1-15 (remember the
year of Ryan Leaf?) or, even worse, 0-16 (poor Detroit) seasons. And I love
talking smack.  Anyone who reads my blog will know that.  However, what gets
my goat, to be cliche, are those “fans” who discount any team’s or player’s
accomplishments on the simple fact that they have not won a Super Bowl.  In
my opinion (upon which this entire blog is based anyway) I would rather back a
team that has never won a Super Bowl but has individual and collective
character (and an occasional DUI does not equate with, oh, shooting oneself in
the leg, assault and battery, dogfighting, etc.).
