The NBA Finals, D) The NFL Draft, or E) Opening/Closing Ceremonies for the Olympics? If you answered D)
The NFL Draft, go ahead and give yourself two points. That stat used to amaze me, but as I got older, I realized
that there really are only two seasons...football season, and the off-season. Nothing compares to the NFL.

Although the NBA is better than it has ever been in its history,
and for any of you who are looking for a second sport to watch,
now is the time to start watching the NBA. If you think the
Jordan era was exciting, or the Magic/Bird era, then you will be
blown away by the product that’s out there now. David Stern is
about as genius as Pete Rozelle. But…let’s stay on topic.
This time of year, everybody thinks they’re Draft Analysts, and
although there are some whizzes out there, unfortunately about
99% of them are morons.

In part two of our ongoing series focusing on the Chargers strengths and
weaknesses, we take a closer look at the running back position. I was
hoping to have some finality to the Ladainian Tomlinson contract
renegotiations before writing this column, but as of today we still don’t know
exactly how it’s all going to pan out. Will LT and the Chargers reach an
agreement soon, or will this drag out to the point where the team is forced to
take drastic measures? All we can do now is speculate, as any number of
conclusions seem feasible.

Cornerback Antonio Cromartie is not being traded by the Chargers.
Responding to stories about a possible trade for the former Pro Bowl
cornerback, Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said Tuesday that
Cromartie is not on the trading block.
According to agent Drew Rosenhaus, the Chargers expressed interest in
bringing back cornerback Drayton Florence, who left the Chargers last year
to sign with the Jaguars and was cut last month. Florence is still on the
Chargers’ radar, but if San Diego signs him, it doesn’t affect Cromatrie.

Free agency in the NFL is underway and the San Diego
Chargers still have LaDainian Tomlinson on their roster.
Of course that is little guarantee that Tomlinson will be with the
Tomlinson on the roster with his current contract ... but who
knows, that might be just what the Chargers intend to do.

As quickly as the rumor of Antonio Cromartie potentially be traded
was started it is quickly dismissed. Just proving that no one
really knows for sure what the Chargers have in store for any of
their players and that the media continues to speculate only the
worst for many of the big-name Charger players.

Hmm - looks as though A.J. Smith might be interested in
signing the 7 year veteran to help us solidify our safety
positions. I can't say that I'm overly excited by the prospect of
this guy joining our team, but he should be able to provide
sufficient competition for our current safeties.

Igor Olshansky has accepted a 4-year, $18 million contract
with the Dallas Cowboys.
Apparently LaDainian Tomlinson has received the Chargers‘ ”
final offer” which, likely, involves a pay cut from the expected
$24 million he is expected to make by 2011 under his original
contract. It’s up to LT now to decide how badly he wants to
remain in San Diego. According to his mother, it’s not
promising that he will remain a Charger. Frankly, I’m sick of all
the back and forth and speculation and such. It’s not that
difficult. The guy’s a millionaire already and has broken
virtually every RB record. Make a decision already and get on
with it so the Chargers can plan their draft strategy.

There are many rumors floating about when it comes to
Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson, but the latest
may be the most damaging when it comes to him staying with
the team for 2009 and/or beyond.
Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that the
Chargers have made their final offer to Tomlinson, and that the
decision is now in his hands as to whether he’ll stay. Acee
says that the length of the revised contract is not clear, but it’s
certain that the Chargers will be paying him less than the $24
million he’s due to be paid over the next three years.

Chargers pitch restructured deal to LT

LaDainian Tomlinson is staying with the San Diego Chargers
as both sides reached an agreement on a restructured
contract that will keep the Pro Bowl running back with the team
in 2009, according to sources close to Tomlinson and the
franchise.
Tomlinson approved the deal Tuesday night. Chargers
management, including president Dean Spanos, was vital in
helping patch what had been a tense situation in January.

LaDainian Tomlinson and the San Diego Chargers
restructured the final three years of his contract in a deal that
gives the team some needed cap room and it gives Tomlinson
more job security.
Complete details of the breakdown weren't available Tuesday
night. According to a source, Tomlinson won't take a pay cut
from his $6.725 million salary in 2009 but the deal was
restructured to give the team a cap break in 2009. Tomlinson's
cap number in 2009 was scheduled to be $8,791,666.

Chargers president Dean Spanos seemed to have the best
perspective on the LaDainian Tomlinson saga.
"The alternative was just unthinkable. He belongs in San
Diego," Spanos said after the Chargers and Tomlinson

L.T. feels the same way. That's because the alternative, of
course, would have been for the star running back to be
released had the sides not reached a deal.

Tomlinson On Remaining With San Diego

Continuing our breakdown of the Chargers' roster, today we
look at the wide receiver position. The Chargers boast a young
and deep wide receiver group that is full of potential. With
former Pro Bowler Chris Chambers the veteran of the group at
age 30 and the unquestioned leader, one could expect the rest
of the group to continue to improve in the 2009 season.
But before we get to the receivers, I have to ask - "Can we get
some closure on this whole LT thing?"

The NFL will look into changing instant replay rules in hopes of avoiding a
repeat of the blown call by referee Ed Hochuli that helped cost San Diego a
game last season.
The competition committee will propose at the league meetings next week
that when the ball comes loose when a quarterback is throwing, replay can
be used to determine if it is a fumble or an incomplete pass. Such a change
would resemble the rules alteration made for down-by-contact plays two
years ago.

Kevin Burnett’s introduction to the media was delayed a day - and he
couldn’t be happier. Not that the free-agent, inside linebacker was
reluctant to meet the press. It was just that the Chargers had a more
pressing item to take care of last week: telling the world LaDainian
Tomlinson was staying in San Diego.
“I was praying I had LT as a teammate,” Burnett said. “I
contemplated walking in there and shaking his hand during the
press conference to let him know I’m glad I don’t have to play
against him. I’m excited to get to play with LT and I’m excited to be in

Looks as though Kassim Osgood, one of my favorite Chargers due to
his positive influence on the community and his San Diego ties (SDSU

I'm not going to make a big stink of this because Kassim's frustration
at not being played more often at wide receiver and his impending free
agency scream "trade", but I have to say that I would be bummed to
see him go. Aside from his ability to dominate on Special Teams,
Kassim has made no secret of his love for San Diego, which is music
to the ears of any San Diego native.

which rewards players for playing time based upon their salary
level, the league announced Tuesday.
Approximately $105 million was distributed to players in the
system for their performance during the 2008 playing season.
Clary, a 2006 sixth-round draft pick out of Kansas State, earned $405,859 in additional pay. He started all 16

Any smart NFL fan knows that a good offense starts at the line
of scrimmage. Having addressed one piece to the Chargers
running game with the retention of Ladainian Tomlinson, now
the focus turns to the 2nd, and possibly most important piece:
the offensive line. Much maligned throughout the 2008 season
due to a combination of health issues and just poor play, the
offensive line is one of the top areas that needs improvement
for the Bolts.

That’s exactly what NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wants.
There are several hurdles before the league can expand its

reaching a new collective bargaining agreement with the
players’ union.
Still, the commissioner hopes to present a proposal to the
owners in May after the matter was discussed at length this

The Chargers at least know where and when they will be

Welcome to the Black Hole, Bolts.
The Chargers will face the Oakland Raiders, their longtime
and most hated rival, to kick off the season as the second
game of a “Monday Night Football” doubleheader on Sept. 14.
The game is part of the NFL’s tip of the hat to the old AFL, by
matching the original AFL teams against each other. The
Chargers, like the other originals, are celebrating their 50th season this year.
And what better way to get fired up for the first game than staring at the Raiders and being on a stage where
there is but one game to watch.
