"I don't know, you tell me."
A phrase that can be heard at a Jay Cutler press

In between rolling his eyes and giving curt responses,
the phrase "I don't know, you tell me," is a point at
which you know the press conference is about to end.

Or all the answers have been given. Because the
subject is unwilling to respond in a civilized manner.
Jay Cutler has been described as spoiled, smug, a guy with the personality of a doorstop. But the one description

Antonio Gates missed a second straight practice Thursday as
San Diego continued to prepare for its home wild-card playoff
It sounds as if Tomlinson, who has a strained groin, is in
better shape than Gates, who has a sprained ankle.

"If we were playing today he probably wouldn't play," coach
Norv Turner said about Gates, the Pro Bowl tight end.

And L.T.? "Yeah, I think he would," the coach said.
"Both of them are a lot better than they have been," Turner said. "It really will be a Saturday decision, how they
feel. We'll get them out there and run around and see how they feel. I'm optimistic about both of them."

SAN DIEGO (AP)—These guys might as well be
division rivals.

Peyton Manning, voted NFL MVP for a record-tying third
time, and his Indianapolis Colts face Philip Rivers and
the San Diego Chargers for the fourth time in two
seasons Saturday night.

Not only are the teams familiar with each other, they

After fighting week-by-week to stay alive in the playoff chase, the Colts (12-4) and Chargers (8-8) should be
acclimated to the pressure accompanying their wild-card showdown at Qualcomm Stadium.

“You’ve got two teams that have been in very similar situations, that we’ve essentially been playing elimination
games these past five, six weeks,” Manning said. “We didn’t feel like we could afford to lose one because we felt
like we would get behind, whether it was against New England or Baltimore, because we knew we were playing
for the wild card.”

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Darren Sproles ran off the field clutching the
game ball, leaving Peyton Manning to hang his head in
frustration.

The San Diego Chargers outdid Manning for the second
straight January, again turning to surprise stars to spark them
along in the playoffs.

Given more playing time because of LaDainian Tomlinson’s
groin injury, the speedy little Sproles scooted 22 yards for the
winning score 6:20 into overtime and the Chargers beat the
Colts 23-17 in an AFC wild-card game Saturday night.
Manning won his third Associated Press NFL MVP award.

Also keeping the Chargers in the game was Mike Scifres, whose booming punts continually pinned the Colts
deep in their territory. Scifres punted six times for an average of 52.7 yards, including a 67-yarder.

SAN DIEGO -- Peyton Manning has his MVP award and nothing
more, outdone again in January by the San Diego Chargers.

Speedy little Darren Sproles scooted 22 yards for the winning
score 6:20 into overtime and the Chargers beat the Colts
23-17 in an AFC wild-card game Saturday night, ending
Indianapolis' nine-game winning streak a day after Manning
won his third Associated Press NFL MVP award.
Sproles came up big on a night when the Chargers played the final 2 ½ quarters without LaDainian Tomlinson,
who stood on the sideline in obvious discomfort from what appears to be a serious groin injury.

SAN DIEGO (AP)—With LaDainian Tomlinson perhaps hurt
worse than the team is letting on and Darren Sproles sore
from all the running he did in a thrilling wild-card win, the San
Diego Chargers turned their thoughts toward the weather and
the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense.

The Chargers finally jumped above .500 and earned a rematch
against the Steelers by outlasting Peyton Manning and the
Indianapolis Colts 23-17 in overtime Saturday night.
They anticipate a cold, hard-hitting divisional-round game Sunday at Pittsburgh.
“That’ll be a factor in how you play the game, and when you get in those games, obviously running the ball and
playing defense are critical,” coach Norv Turner said Sunday.

PITTSBURGH (AP)—The finish to the Chargers-Steelers game
was strange enough, with the first 11-10 score in NFL history
and Troy Polamalu stripped of a last-play defensive touchdown
by an officiating error.

This may be even stranger: The Chargers, 4-8 with a month
left in the season, are returning to Pittsburgh for a rematch in
an AFC divisional playoff game Sunday.
Probably not many of those who, according to Las Vegas gambling experts, dropped an estimated $60 million
when the officials reversed themselves and errantly took away Polamalu’s fumble return score Nov. 16. Referee
Scott Green and the league later said a call that didn’t affect the outcome—the Steelers would have won
regardless—but altered the point spread was wrong.

The officiating mistake put Steelers players in the uncomfortable position of talking about something they all
know exists—gambling on NFL games—but has no effect on the way they play.

SAN DIEGO (AP)—San Diego Chargers wide receiver Vincent Jackson
was arrested Tuesday on suspicion of drunken driving.

Jackson failed sobriety tests shortly after 2 a.m. on state Route 52 in
San Diego, said California Highway Patrol Officer Ray Scheidnes. He
said he didn’t know Jackson’s blood alcohol level.

An officer stopped Jackson after spotting the player braking abruptly,
speeding and weaving in a 2008 GMC Sierra, said Highway Patrol
Officer Brad Baehr. Jackson was on probation for a previous DUI
arrest, he said.

The player was taken to the San Diego County jail and released.
Chargers general manager A.J. Smith said he was aware of Jackson's "off-the-field issue."

"Obviously we're disappointed," Smith said. "We take these issues very seriously. Moving forward, we will
monitor the situation and have no further comment."

Jackson, in a brief statement released through the team, said he didn't think charges would be filed against him.

SAN DIEGO (AP)—There was the strained groin in 2004, the
lingering rib injury in 2005, a jaw injury in 2006, the knee injury
in last year’s playoffs and then his jammed right big toe earlier
this season.

Now there’s the groin injury that’s dogging LaDainian

Diego Chargers’ playoff game at Pittsburgh on Sunday.

The star running back isn’t sure if a week’s worth of treatment

When the San Diego Chargers visited the Pittsburgh Steelers
the game overshadowed the most relevant facts relating to the
Steelers’ 11-10 win.

The post-game chatter focused entirely on the horrendously
bad call from referee Scott Green, who removed a Troy
Polamalu touchdown from the scoreboard—
and caused the home team not to cover the point spread.

The outcome of the game was an afterthought, with most fans assuming that it was a close, hard-fought game
that, like so many others this year, the Steelers somehow found a way to win.

It was. But it wasn’t.

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Words don’t come nearly as easily as yards and
touchdowns do for Darren Sproles, the exciting little running back for the
San Diego Chargers.

Yet in the minutes and days after he helped carry the Bolts into the
divisional round of the playoffs, there he was, facing wave after wave of
reporters and cameramen and not backing down and inch.

Sproles stutters. Not as bad as he did when he emerged as a playmaker
at Kansas State, but when the cameras turn on and he’s asked to recount
his exploits, the thought is there but sometimes the words aren’t as quick
to follow.
He’d just as soon have an angry, amped-up linebacker in his face as he would a microphone. But he figures it’s
playoffs, Sproles is going to get his carries and receptions and punt and kickoff returns — and attention.

SAN DIEGO (AP)—LaDainian Tomlinson confirmed
Wednesday that he has a torn tendon in his groin and listed
himself as doubtful for the San Diego Chargers’ playoff game
at Pittsburgh on Sunday.

“It’s definitely torn,” Tomlinson said after sitting out Wednesday’

give too much information away.”

Tomlinson was hurt in a 52-21 rout against Denver in the
groin.

“If it was a strain I’d be able to play with it, trust me,” Tomlinson said. “A lot of guys have strains.”

Reports surfaced prior to Saturday’s wild-card win against the Indianapolis Colts that Tomlinson has a detached
tendon that connects one of his groin muscles to his pubic bone.

Chargers would be making if they were to trade or release LT.

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Peyton Manning’s biggest nemesis in Saturday night’s

It was punter Mike Scifres, San Diego’s secret weapon who stuck six

PITTSBURGH (AP)—John Madden remembers the ice, Dan
Pastorini the insufferable rain. Fred Taylor almost called a
lawyer over it. Doug Brien lost a job because of it.

No team embraces home-field advantage like the Pittsburgh
Steelers do, for better or worse—and, for decades, they’ve
been known for having one of the NFL’s worst fields.
No matter whether it was Three Rivers Stadium’s hard-as-concrete artificial surface or Heinz Field’s invisible
grass, this is a turf on which many fear to tread, especially in the brutal cold and whipping winds of what Steelers
coach Mike Tomlin calls January football.

There are Terrible Towels in the stands, but many a playoff fumble or interception has been blamed on
Pittsburgh’s terrible turf. A year ago, Jaguars running back Taylor called the chewed-up, mushy and pockmarked
field “a lawsuit waiting to happen.” NFL players voted it the league’s worst, perhaps because the Steelers own
the NFL’s best home-field record since 1970.

SAN DIEGO (AP)—LaDainian Tomlinson was officially listed as
doubtful by the San Diego Chargers on Friday, two days before
they play at Pittsburgh in the AFC divisional playoffs.

Tomlinson himself said he was doubtful two days earlier, and
there’s a growing expectation that the 2006 NFL MVP won’t play
due to a detached tendon in his groin.

“I’m going to hold out hope, but I don’t know if that’s realistic,”
coach Norv Turner said.
the injury forced him to the sideline after he scored on a 3-yard run.

Turner said there was no need to rule Tomlinson out before Sunday.

“I don’t think we need to do that because he is feeling better, and if he gets up Sunday and he’s feeling good, we
may want him to be one of the 45,” Turner said.

Pro Bowl tight end Antonio Gates (ankle) is listed as questionable and kicker Nate Kaeding (groin, ankle) is
probable. Tomlinson and Gates missed practice all week. Kaeding missed practice Thursday and Friday after
spraining his ankle in practice on Wednesday.

With the Chargers heading into an offseason of uncertainty on

Coach Norv Turner’s job is safe, which is saying something in light of a
