so much to write about. This time around, I want to speak about LT’s contract situation before all the fallout hits
tomorrow. I’m assuming we will know something tomorrow because it is the start of free agency, and most NFL
veterans who are going to be released receive their walking papers on “Veteran Wednesday”. If you take a look
at which NFL veterans have already been released, and add it to the list of players which have been left
unsigned or unprotected, you could easily put together a Super Bowl-worthy team. And this list will look twice as
tasty in about 12 hours.

A truce, so it seems, has been called between Chargers general manager
A.J. Smith and star running back LaDainian Tomlinson.
Smith drew the ire of Chargers fans—and Tomlinson—when recently
mocking Tomlinson’s statement on his website that he would like to remain
a Charger.
There has been chatter that Tomlinson would be moved, cut or asked to
restructure his contract which will count some $8 million against the salary
cap next season.
But Tomlinson wanted to get the word out—on his website—that any decision regarding him leaving the
Chargers is out of his hands.

SAN DIEGO (AP)—Chargers defensive tackle Jamal Williams was
arrested on suspicion of drunken driving, the team’s second such
arrest in less than a month.
Williams was pulled over for speeding early Sunday on a freeway
outside downtown, the California Highway Patrol said. Williams gave a
blood sample for a blood-alcohol test, but the results were not yet
known. Williams was booked into county jail and later released on bail.
The City Attorney’s office said the case hadn’t been submitted as of
Tuesday.
“It’s disappointing to hear about the issue involving Jamal Williams,” general manager A.J. Smith said in a
statement released by the team. “We’ll continue to monitor the situation and let the legal process run its course.

SAN DIEGO (AP)—A lawsuit filed by the city of San Diego against the NFL’s Chargers has been dismissed and
the two sides have agreed to work out several accounting disputes that have gone unresolved during the past
four years.
The city filed a breach-of-contract suit against the Chargers last month, claiming the team owes the city more
than $170,000 for use of Qualcomm Stadium in 2004.
City attorney Jan Goldsmith, who was elected in November, said the suit was filed just days before the four-year
statute of limitations expired. Goldsmith said the matter should have been handled years ago.
“This is the responsible thing to do,” Goldsmith said Tuesday. “I thank the city and the Chargers for this
agreement. Litigation is expensive and often unnecessary. We want to resolve matters before litigation if at all
possible. I’m hopeful that the financial analysts can resolve these accounting issues.”

my entries in the future can better understand my tact and angle with the
Chargers and also, because many of my pieces are opinionated, validate ...I
need to make sure everyone that has read me in the past and will read my
opinion based on my personal thoughts regarding the Chargers. So I
present "My Charger Credentials":
First, I am not a professional writer - although I am fairly certain many
wouldn't need me to point that out. I do believe I have the record for most
run-on sentences as well as the longest run-on sentence in the history of
writing - which has yet to end for I am still in the process of writing it. My use
of punctuation is also a bit abnormal but once you can decipher the
sentence and it's bizarre characteristics, I've been told, a point can be found.

So it turns out that our lovely city and its lead attorney are not going to sue the Chargers after all
(http://chargers.com/news/headlines/city-dismisses-lawsuit.htm). But...but why not? How come a city that is
trying to keep its football team from moving to another town wouldn't want to sue its only major sports attraction?
That just doesn't make any sense. Alright, enough sarcasm.
One of the local talk radio shows recently told the story of how a Padres fan wrote a letter and sent it to each club
in the league, aside from the Pads, saying that his fan loyalty was up for "sale" to any team willing to write him
back with a decent explanation of why he should support them rather than the Padres. The only thing crazy about
that story is that I can actually understand where he's coming from. I would never stop rooting for any of the local
thinking that the last year might rank up there with the worst in local history.

The San Diego Chargers have their work cut out for them if
they hope to compete for a Super Bowl this season. Its true the
team will need to address it's problems on both sides of the
ball. We'll be going through each of the Chargers 2009 needs,
but today we'll look at the defense - more specificall, we'll look
at the Chargers' struggles getting off the field on third down:
"What's happened to the defense on third-down conversions? It seems automatic for the offenses now. It's been
much too easy. They're dangerous, because they can break your spirit." - AJ Smith

Jamal Williams was arrested last weekend on suspicion of driving under the influence outside of downtown San
Diego. He was booked and released; however, the results of his blood-alcohol blood test have not been
released. You know, it has to take a LOT of alcohol to affect a big guy like him.
Anyway, this, after Vincent Jackson’s DUI arrest while on probation for one already, has prompted me to wonder
what is up with these guys. Go ahead and have fun, but please be responsible. Leave a Comment

The clock is ticking on A.J. Smith making a decision on what to
do with L.T. I personally can't see the next move being
anything other than the Chargers asking LaDainian to
re-structure his contract so they can re-sign as many core
players as possible (Philip, Shawne, etc.), but you never know
with A.J. To his credit, that's one of the things that makes him
a good G.M.
I do think it's a good sign that both sides have been quiet recently. Ever since L.T. came out and told Jim Rome
that Smith called to apologize for his apparent mocking of Tomlinson's blog post about wanting to retire a
Charger, mum has been the word, so to speak.

Chargers free agent to be linebacker Igor Olshansky could be
headed elsewhere once the signing period starts on February
27th. The Dallas Morning News says that Igor could end up in
Dallas:
Assuming that the Cowboys can’t afford to keep Chris Canty, they
might try to replace him via free agency. San Diego’s Igor
Olshansky could be a slightly cheaper option who has experience
in Wade Phillips’ scheme. Leave a Comment
02/09/09 Blogroll: Boltitis Sports Writer Apparently the Chargers will be celebrating their 50th anniversary during the 2009 season. The most notable nod to the Bolts' past will be them wearing the uniforms they wore during their 1963 AFL Championship season (for anyone that needs to brush up on Bolt history 101, they beat the Boston Patriots for the title). While that will be nice to see, and certainly provide a welcome change from the somewhat played out powder blues, it would be pretty sweet if they broke out the

02/10/09 Blogroll: Rob Zepeda, BoltHype Sports Writer Jay Cutler and Philip Rivers might not be best of friends, but that wont stop Kris Dielman from buddying up with the Broncos QB. Dielman spent some time with Cutler over at the Pro Bowl in Hawaii and he came away fairly impressed. Turning a blind eye towards the on-field and off-field bitterness between the rival gunslingers, Dielman instead chose to point out the similarities Rivers and Cutler share:

"We're all out here in Hawaii having a good time. We'll deal with that during the season. Jay's a good dude. Philip's a good dude. They're two competitors. That's what happens when you have two competitors going at each other."

Today’s San Diego Union-Tribune talks about the team possibly shocking the league by putting the franchise tag on upcoming free agent RB Darren Sproles. He’s due to hit the open market on February 26th. If he does, he could go the way of Michael Turner, who left via free agency last season and went on for a monster year with the Falcons.

02/10/09 Blogroll: SayOw BlogSpot Sports Writer Last week the Chargers announced that they will be wearing a commemorative patch on their jerseys next season to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the team and the AFL.
There will also be 2 weekends when the Chargers will be playing one of the 7 other original AFL teams and will get to wear their chosen throwback during those games. The Chargers have chosen to wear the uniform from their 1963 AFL Championship team.
Hopefully the Charger team that takes the field next season can be good representatives of the Charger franchise during this anniversary season.

02/11/09 Blogroll: SayOw BlogSpot Sports Writer The day is quickly approaching for the San Diego Chargers, the day the Chargers will be forced to publicly declare what their intentions are with the greatest runningback their franchise has ever possessed, LaDainian Tomlinson.
ary 19th is the day all teams must announce their franchise player. Of course the Chargers don't and won't need to franchise Tomlinson, but if they do put that tag on Darren Sproles, which most think will happen, then it will only add to the speculation of what's going to happen to LT.

There is no doubt that Matt Stafford and his cannon of an arm is the best pro
prospect in the 2009 NFL Draft class. He'll likely go number one overall to
the Detroit Lions who desperately need a franchise quarterback. Conversely,
the San Diego Chargers already have their elite signal caller and will likely
not even consider drafting a QB in the first round. In fact, the only positions
the Chargers would consider drafting with the 16th overall pick are Offensive
Tackle, Defensive Tackle, Defensive End, Linebacker, Wide Receiver,
Defensive Back, and Running Back. With that in mind, we've ranked the top
20 overall players who we think would be excellent fits for the San Diego

Are the Chargers still A-OK with having L.T. as their featured running back?
Such a question seemed unlikely this time last year. But after ending his
second straight season on the sidelines when the Chargers needing him
most in the playoffs, that thought is no longer off limits.
After eight seasons of being one of the NFL’s top backs, has time run out on
Tomlinson.
He is coming off his worst season - if one wants to call it that - since he was
drafted No. 5 overall by the Chargers. Still, he rushed for more than 1,100
yards and ran for 11 touchdowns, despite being compromised with a toe
and groin injury.

Since becoming the San Diego Chargers GM in 2003, AJ Smith has had a
great deal of success rebuilding the team through the NFL Draft. Indeed,
Smith has become a respected figure in NFL circles based on his keen
ability to scout talent. AJ is not one to discuss his football business publicly,
and you would hardly expect him to divulge in detail his plans for the
upcoming draft. But with six drafts under his belt here in San Diego, we
begin to get a better grasp on his approach. Whether we come to
conclusions based on coincidence or trend, there are a few "certainties" we
can expect come draft day...

SAN DIEGO (AP)—The San Diego Chargers placed the non-
exclusive franchise tag on Darren Sproles on Wednesday,
virtually assuring that the speedy little running back-returner
will be back next season.
Sproles had been scheduled to become an unrestricted free
agent. The Chargers tendered him a one-year contract offer of
approximately $6.6 million, the average of the top five salaried
running backs from 2008.

Rey Maualuga's name is being linked the to San Diego
Chargers from multiple sources, and for good reason; the
Chargers' defense proved vulnerable last year, especially up
the middle. The loss of an impact player of Shawne
Merriman's caliber certainly didn't help matters, but even by
reaching into the depth chart the Chargers were never able to
fully compensate for Merriman's loss, and they lacked
consistent intensity all season long.

In the weeks leading up to the draft (April 25 will be here before you know it),
I hope to break down the Chargers' roster, position by position, and discuss
their strengths and weaknesses, the good and the bad, the deepest
positions and the roster holes. For the first part of the series, we'll review the
Quarterback position.
You could say that Quarterback was the position in which the Chargers
shined the brightest in 2008. Philip Rivers, following offseason knee
surgery, had a year that set team records for TD's in a season (34) and
Passer Rating (105.5). As the running game stalled with an injured RB and
a weak offensive line, Rivers was forced to throw early and often and ended
up with Pro Bowl caliber numbers.
