Well, the draft has come and gone, and I must say that I am not very pleased.  But before this turns into a 3-page tongue-
lashing of A.J. Smith, I will say that I actually liked some of what he did.  I’m going to grade our 2009 draft and will assess it to
you pick-by-pick.  Later in the week I will give my input on the 18 un-drafted free agents we signed on Monday. No, not all 18,
but the fact that we signed 18, and which ones were key acquisitions.  Also, I will compare how we fared versus our division
opponents, which team(s) I feel did the best, and the team that did the absolute worst (although many of you probably know
this one already…Raiders…umm, but yeah).

Maybe the man most happy about Tampa Bay showering Kellen Winslow Jr. with a rich contract
was the Chargers’ Antonio Gates.

While Winslow’s numbers can’t compare to Gates, that didn’t stop the Buccaneers from
handing him a six-year, $36.1 million deal which includes a $20.1 million chunk of guaranteed
money.

Gates, the perennial Pro Bowler, and the Chargers will soon be doing business. And with
business being good for tight ends—see Winslow’s deal—Gates will soon become a very rich
man.

Smith: Bolts have ‘a lot to fix’ during draft
04/20/09
Associated Press
A.J. Smith could use a draft-day rebound.

His San Diego Chargers are hardly the Super Bowl-caliber team many
people thought going into last year, and the general manager’s last two
drafts seemed to bring about as many questions as answers.

While the Chargers remain a talented bunch, Smith has admitted the Bolts
have a lot of work to do to become more than just a team that routinely wins
the mild, mild AFC West before being left stranded somewhere along the
road to the Super Bowl.

Chargers add 18 free agents
04/28/09
Chargers.com
The Chargers announced Monday that they’ve agreed to contractual terms
with 18 undrafted rookie free agents. The team also released Scott Chandler
and DeJuan Tribble.

The Chargers didn’t draft an offensive tackle over the weekend but will add
three as free agents: Samuel Allen of Grand Valley State, Baylor’s Dan Gay
and Ben Muth from Stanford.  Illinois center Ryan McDonald also joins the
offensive line group.
Sproles signs rich 1-year deal with Chargers
04/28/09
Associated Press
Chargers running back Darren Sproles on Tuesday signed the $6,621,000 million
contract he was tendered as the team’s franchise player.

Sproles had been scheduled to become an unrestricted free agent before the
Chargers tagged him as their franchise player. His pay is the average of what the
top five running backs in the league are paid.
The speedy little running back and dangerous return specialist made $1.1 million
in base pay last year.
